![]() Lennox Hearth ProductsThe level of technological development and structural design in fireplaces today has totally transformed the wood-burning appliances of yesterday, yielding options for fireplaces that are very modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly. Consumers now have a variety of styles and designs to choose from in wood burning fireplaces, electric, propane or gas fireplaces. The decision between the two depends on which type of fuel you have available and whether you would like a fireplace that can also serve as your primary home heating system. Natural gas fireplaces are the most popular and in many cases offer better value overall. However, wood-burning fireplaces and propane fireplaces are more suited to rural homes or cottages where a connection for natural gas is not available. Electric fireplaces and gas fireplaces, have the advantage of reduced need for cleaning and ease of use. These are very important features for those with health sensitivities or very little time to chop and carry wood, as well as cleaning up afterwards. These systems also save your energy dollars by not suffering the heat-loss common in a long vent run from the central furnace. The heat that’s produced in the room gets projected into the room. Empire offers a variety of gas-fired heaters, employing three different technologies – Direct-Vent, B-Vent, and Vent-Free. Nearly all are available in LP and natural gas models. Unlike a conventional furnace, most Empire heaters provide heat even when electric power fails. The system you choose will depend on the amount of heat required, the efficiency you desire, the location of the heater, and local codes. American Hearth is a division of Empire Comfort Systems, Inc. The American Hearth line has many innovative products available for you. From vent-free fireplaces to realistic log sets, you will get quality and comfort from the American Hearth product line. |
Fireplace FAQ
Will a gas fireplace operate during a power failure? Gas fireplaces with a standing pilot light will operate during a power failure because there is a continual gas supply. What are BTUs? BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, a measurement that represents heat output. Typically 10,000 BTU can heat approximately 500 square feet. What is a direct-vent fireplace? A direct-vent fireplace is a sealed combustion appliance where air is drawn from outside and all smoke and vapor is vented directly outside. What does the term 'zero clearance' mean? Zero clearance is a general term that refers to all factory-built fireplaces that can be placed directly against combustible materials (walls, floor) without requiring a buffer zone. Can I replace my wood fireplace with a gas fireplace? Yes, a direct-vent gas fireplace can replace a wood fireplace. You must also have access to a gas supply. What is the difference between inserts and gas logs? An insert is a metal box that fits into the opening of a wood-burning fireplace to increase its efficiency and enhance its look. Gas log sets are hooked up to a gas line to reproduce the look of wood logs. What is the difference between natural gas and propane? Natural gas is a lighter gas than propane. Liquid propane gas contains 2,500 BTUs per cubic foot, while natural gas contains 1000 BTUs per cubic foot. It takes twice as much natural gas to reach the same BTU rate as propane. Natural gas enters your home through a pipeline from a local supplier and propane is stored in a tank. HOUSEHOLD HEATING SYSTEMS No matter what kind of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system you have in your house, you can save money and increase your comfort by properly maintaining and upgrading your equipment. ![]() More Home Heating Info |
